Nothing special, really, except for the RAM. P3 500MHz, 512MB RAM, two vidcards+monitors (17", 19"), all running on Win2k.Originally posted by isuru
WOW :O qslack your desktop rulez.
What are the specs of your machine?
I don't quite see how I lived without two monitors. I suggest everyone just get a cheap 4mb vidcard and an old 13" monitor for a total of $200. It's really worth it.
Nothing special - 512mb of ram - are you sure????
I wouldn't have a clue how to work with two monitors, but would be interested in learning more (currently work with 2 pc's).

I have a Matrox G400 Dualhead, which supports a desktop with two monitors. Current I don't use second display for that though. I use it with a video monitor (in other words, a television - for video editing and DVD viewing).

At first I thought that 2 monitors would be hard to get used to. They were...for abut a day or two. Then I figured out how to really use them...one monitor should be for chat, mail, and the task manager, while the other should be for whatever you're focused on. At least that's how it works best for me. Here's a pic of my desk (64k).

qslack, what's your home address? I think it might be time for me to enter into the cat burglary business!![]()
*puts on his reading glasses*
oooops, ahem.....sorry - can't read!I said nothing special but the RAM
How do you physically operate on two screens? I mean mouse and keyboard control....how does it all work? Also, what sort of resource drain is it on the pc?? I'm fascinated at this option...

My home town is listed in my profile. Not so sure about giving out my address to someone who labels themself a "cat burglar"
Well, with two monitors, you just pretend that you have one big monitor. You can drag windows from one monitor to the other normally, and the keyboard only has focus on one window. It's pretty hard to have one big window spanning both monitors, so most people just separate them into different tasks.
The resource drain isn't all that noticeable, except when playing games. My left monitor (the one I don't play games on) sometimes will not refresh or will invert itself when I play resource-greedy games like Counterstrike, Q3A, and even Starcraft. During normal (non-game) use, the benefits in productivity of two monitors far outweigh their price and performance loss.

I have to agree with Qslack, I have been using two monitors (with 2 cards 1 ELSA Erasor IIIPro AGP 2x and a cheapo £30er pci). It has been a godsend for things like Photoshop/Corel and Dreamweaver, just drag all the pallets onto the right monitor (15") which gives me a beautiful uncluttered working document on my 17". Only took me a couple of days to get used to using it too. Just wish I had it at work now, but then again I use a 21" there so that just might be being greedy
When working on web pages it's a HUGE time saver, I generally work at 1280 x 1024 but have the second monitor set at 800x600 so all I need to do to test at that resolution is drag the browser over to that screen and maximise, brilliant.

While they are fighting over whose is the best, we can fight over whose is most boring.

I have two 19" monitors and it is simply beautiful. I love being able to stick code on one screen and the browser window on the other; save one place, refresh the other, and if you need to look for bugs you don't have to move anything but your mousewheel a bit!![]()

Your desktop is cool...are you using Litestep or some other explorer.exe replacement shell thing? Or did you just customize Windows a lot?Originally posted by Shin Ma

Let me weigh in on the dual monitors thing...
There is no other thing (other than a faster computer) that will improve your effieciency more than two monitors. At least as far as designers/coders go. The average user would not really get the full benefit as they rarely have need for such things.
My setup is a 19" with a GeForce2mx set to 1280x1024 and a 17" with a generic 4meg card set to 1024x768.
For a web designer, the best setup is to have your main apps (Photoshop, EditPlus, Flash) on the primary and your support apps (IE, Netscape) on the secondary. That way all you have to do is hit ALT + TAB and you've switched monitors.
A little shameless promotion for an app that I found. It is called Ultramon and it is a critical app when it comes to dual monitors. It allows you to use keyboard shirtcuts (why do you think I got it?) to switch apps from one monitor to the other, it allows you to resize your app windows to the window, it also lets you use one monitor as a mirror for other things.
If you use Dual's then you simply MUST install this app and test it out. It is worth every penny of the $30 I paid for it.
