    [post] link never works

What gives? Whenever I try to link back to a post in a different forum, I go to the post I want to link to, get the id number, then return to my original post and insert the sucker as so...
    [post]idnumhere[/post]
... and invariably when you click the link, the reader is taken to some random post in some random forum. Is this a bug, or am I using the post-thingy incorrectly?

Using the bbcode [ post]1740828[/post] (your post above) generates this link:
    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1740828
    which works for me.

Link to this post in the Advanced PHP forum using the [ post]1668371[/post] method, generate this link:
    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1668371
    which also works for me.

Do you have an example to look at, cause I'm not able to reproduce it?

Helge - ditto, but maybe we are getting confused about posts and threads here which are of course 2 very different things.

    Ok, here's an example:

I went to the Web Security forum, and hovered over the link to my post "url poisoining." On the status bar below, the link showed post id 239580. So, let's put 239580 into a post code...

    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?p=239580

...and preview it (which I did). In the preview, I clicked the link and went to some post about nt webhosting. So, what am I doing wrong?

When you hover over the link in the thread listing for a forum you see the thread id in the status bar and not the post id. You're mixing up those two.

    Trying [ thread]239580[/thread]:
    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239580
takes you to the correct thread.

Trying [ post]1721867[/post] (which is the post id of your initial post in the "url poisoning" thread)
    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1721867
takes you to the first post in that thread.

ok, thanks. I figured I was probably doing something wrong. A couple of questions, though. How do you find the post number? I'm looking at a thread, but can't find it anywhere.

For anyone else following along who may not know, you can get to an individual post by clicking on the number in the top right corner of each post.

For example, the post above this one is post #7 and has an id of 1741068.

... and once you're there, you can always come back to the thread in which the single post you're viewing has been posted (top right corner as well).
