Some table row colors aren't showing????

I'm working on a site with some narrow table rows as accent colors and am wondering why they don't show up in Netscape??

Take a look at this in IE and then in Netscape...

Oh yeah - it's a butt-ugly logo also - any inspiring ideas??? If only I could draw a basket...

I didn't go through a long dissection, but here is the first problem:

Netscape considers any <td> </td> to be totally blank and will not display it, not even with a background color. What you need to do is put something in that <td> like

<td>*nbsp;</td> (of course this should be & nbsp; but I can't print it out that way)

But then you will find that the td has the full height of the tallest character in that font size... meaning your little stripes of color will be huge blocks. So you can try

    <td style="font: 1pt arial">*nbsp;</td>

And that has been known to work Or you can do a

    <td><img src="clear.gif" width=1 height=1></td>

Where clear.gif is a 1 x 1 transparent blank gif. This will act as a placeholder to let Netscape know that something does exist in that <td> and it should render the background color.

    Thanks,

Now I know why I see all those 1x1 px spacer.gif's in other sites when I view the source.

BTW - you have a great looking (and obviously popular) vbulletin board. Of course I only visit for the intellectual stimulation...
