action when hitting the back button

What do I need do is to throw a pop-up when the user clicks the back button. I know how to do the alert but what do I need in my code to know they hit the back button??? Thx for any help!!! I'd actually like to direct them to another page instead of the current url in the history.

Uh, I'll try to avoid your site then. Changing the default behaviour like this is plain evil.

I'd suggest you finding alternative methods of keeping users on your website.

Same here. They're using the back button for a reason. Hijacking basic browser functionality isn't very cool.

Plus I don't think there is anything you can do about that anyway.

I should have clarified my reasoning behind this. Its not to "Hijack" the browser. I have a data drill down page and once the user hits the back button the page doesn't automatically refresh, leaving a nasty message from the wonderful Internet Explorer.
