    A Css Idea

hey I'm not sure if anything is allready underway with a visual CSS design software.

    Summary..

To build an open source WYSIWYG CSS design software.

I.e A designer can open the software choose say, a 3 column layout that is compliant with both IE and Firefox and generate the css for use in dreamweaver or another editor.

Or the designer might want a 2 column 100% width layout.

I'm thinking that there are enough hacks out there to accomplish some compliance between browsers.

The software is not a layout or web design program, all it does is simply generates valid CSS fir design purposes..

    Thoughts? Comment? Abuse?.

Ahh...kinda seems like a decent idea that would I'm sure go over well with alot of people that don't know how to hand code a site and don't put effort into learning how different browsers work and what not.

Personally I don't like the idea, just because (although I'm not the best at it) I'm working hard to learn XHTML/CSS and working on hand coding everything and making it compliant. Having a wysiwyg editor for this would kinda defeat the purpose of having any 'real' knowledge.

    Just my opinion.

    It

Its really only for the layouts similar to the old frame layout stuff from yonks ago. I see it as only giving you a correct framework to build with, I dont see it as doing all the css for you.

I just quickly did this in photoshop to visualise what im trying to say.

What's the point? There's already enough resources that provide skeleton tableless layouts.

Think of it this way, the people that already know css can do it themselves. The people that don't know CSS, won't have anywhere to go after they have this skeleton made for them (as you say it's not a web design program).

Also fluid 3 column layouts are not that easy to create in CSS. People will want to have a different color, or image background for each column, and they will struggle, not knowing how to create the images to make it work.

I also personally don't like the idea of the machine controlling/making code.

CSS is a skill that is quite difficult to master. I'd rather see people (like myself), who never use a WYSIWYG editor, and learn to code by hand

It's far more worthwhile. Also there are so many problems to consider and so many hacks that would be needed; here, there and everywhere!
