    Hey there

what's the browser behind aol? Is it based on Netscape/IE or is it stand-alone and therefore likely to display sites differently as with the old IE vs Netscpae games we play everyday?

    Just wondering - thanks.

IE - since 32 bit aol (window 95) all of AOL's browsers have been a proprietary version of IE.

I find that interesting considering AOL now owns Netscape.

not that I am defending Netscape OR AOL (God forbid), but I am sure they have a contract with Microsoft for IE. I am sure that once the contract is finished they will begin using Netscape.

Creole you are right . AOL and Microsoft got together earlier this year to discuses a new contract, the talks broke down. AOL already have a browser in the works based on the Gecko engine. I belive this is due sometime in 2002.

lets face it. The main reason why IE is so prevalent in stats is because of AOL's 25 million users.

thanks for that, so presumably there are no browser specific design issues for aol?

    hehe...

you would be assuming wrong then. Javascript is the worst culprit when it comes to AOL. Like someone else said, the AOL browser is based on IE 4, but a slightly modified, handicapped version of it. Scripts that work perfectly in IE don't work at all in AOL.
