    Lower the rep limit? Squirrel?

This is more for a discussion that was mentioned in this thread and more pointedly brought up on this post. I figured, what the hey, keep more of that discussion on-topic in a new thread.

This is more of a testing-the-waters bit to see what everyone thinks of it. So- should the amount of rep you need to pass around before giving rep to the same person again be lowered from 20 people to 10 people?

Yes, most definitely lower the number to 10! The biggest reason to give rep is to let someone know that you appreciate their contributions to SPF. I understand that safeguards must be in place to try and prevent people from abusing the system, but honestly, having to give rep to 20 other people before you can give rep to the same person again is just plain overkill. The number needs to be lowered.

I seriously disagree. If lowered, people with a bit more rep will keep exchanging it with each other just to boost their green dots.

I think it should be raised. That way, more people would give me rep, and not just give it to Vinnie.

I'm somewhat torn. For the most part I think I would support a 10 person drop since there are cases where I really want to give rep to user x but can't because they've just been helpful numerous times lately. On the other hand I can see mstwntd's point too- it lends itself to be a system that is a little bit more easier to cheat. I was in favor of a 10 person rotation at first, but now I might be leaning a bit away from that stance, perhaps to a 15 person or so. I'm unsure right now.

Yeah but if I can give out rep at a faster pace who knows how many dots everyone else can get?

Is this getting to be a little like an auction now? I'll bid 12 on rep.

It's my addition to rep threads- I've usually thrown in a "squirrel" in much of the rep threads I've partaken in. The original one is at the bottom:

    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/sear...archid=1295636

And it's just kinda stuck, showing up in threads here and there.

Frankly, it's not so much the high limit im angry about, but that the bloody button shows in the postbit even though you can't give that person rep, fooling you into a meaningless click. I think the limit should be lowered to 10, at LEAST. I'd like to see the limit at 5, if possible. The more rep, the more love.

Oooh... I wonder if it would be easy to hack up a test to display the button- if you can't give someone rep either the rep button doesn't display or it's greyed out or the likes. That would be interesting.

Now THAT is one easy agree. The UI should allow you to do what you can do, and not what you can't.

I don't have an opinion about 20 being high or low, but I would admit that 20 is high enough that it is easy to forget which were the last 20 people you have provided rep to. Couple that with the fact that some people are just really talented with coming up with useful posts and that's a recipie for users wasting their time clicking for no reason.

Heh, I think I'm just going back and forth between what should be and what shouldn't be- I haven't made up my mind yet as to what I think should be the case (also haven't voted yet). I think your point about people more or less randomly giving out rep in order to get through their cycle is also a valid point.

Are you sure about this? There isn't anything in the forum FAQ about reputation that says this. Could that be a rule that's listed somewhere else in the forum?

With regard to reputation in general, I think the daily limit for total reps given should at least match the number of reps you must give before you can give rep to the same person again. Even if someone randomly gave out rep just so they could do that, they would for still have to wait a day before being allowed to do so. Isn't that enough of a safeguard against abusing the system?

Thanks for finding that, Dean. I guess this question doesn't get asked enough to warrant putting it in the forum FAQ, but I still think it should be there anyway. Otherwise, I'm sure it will come up again.
