newbie question - how to create search engine?

Hello,
I would like to know what do I need to consider when creating a search engine to search content in my own site - using php/mysql/apache?
....
It seems there must be one program that searches for newly content and insert and create a new index file out of it... every hour, every day? I'm not sure.
