Does google need to port theirs though? There's already a google search by default and the pagerank extension is easy to find.

Yahoo making a FireFox toolbar helps to solidify it as a true contender for the browser crown. As more and more companies realize that it is worth developing for FireFox it will continue to grow in popularity as users will have less reasons to stay away.

Well, if for no other reasons then Yahoo did it, Firefox's head developer works for Google, and Google supposed to be open, cross-platform, and non-evil, and all that. Last I heard, Google frowns on the page-rank extension.

The PR extension is much (MUCH) less intrusive than an entire toolbar. It's not taking any page realestate, it just adds itself to the already-existing status bar. I'd never go back to the Google Toolbar with the PR bar installed. Perhaps that's why Google frowns on it...
