    Is there a word for...

I thought I'd leave the title of this thread open-ended even though I have a specific question. That way if you have a similar question, you can pose it here if you like. :-)

Is there a word for when you make a mistake, but really it was caused by a greater error in judgment at some other point?

For example, sitting on your glasses would be a mistake, but leaving your glasses in a place where you sit was the larger error that allowed the glasses to get crushed.

Ironic? Are you saying that asking the question was a mistake? :-)

Shame on me? Sure, but we all make these sort of mistakes constantly, the phenomenon seems like a staple of life to me, which is why I wonder if there is a quick way to refer to it without explaining the whole idea. Or were you asking if there was a single word for the expression, "shame on me"?

Stupidity? Stupidity sometimes could be a broad categorization, but not all mistakes are stupid.

But then watching the bad tv program on tv which made you get up and put your glasses on the couch would be a even further pre-mistake. Then switching channels to watch the bad program, etc etc..

Watching a bad TV program lacks correlation to glasses breaking. You may as well bring up the butterfly in Ohio at that point. Leaving your glasses on a chair directly increases the risk of them being sat upon.

"Chain of events leading to a mistake" is good, but still a bit wordy.

Self fulfilling prophecy suggests you knew what would ultimately happen.

Poor judgment could be applied to a mistake that occurs immediately, without poor judgment beforehand.

No, that would be if you sat on your glasses the day after the warranty ran out.

Thank you. Unfortunately, I can't take credit, I ran the question by someone who would like to be credited as my "mysterious husband." I don't know what that's supposed to mean, which I guess makes him mysterious after all.
