    free php code editor that highlights code blocks

    Hey Guys,

    I was wondering if any of you out there know if there is a *FREE* code editor that can format code by the colors. The one i'm using now can (i forgot the name), but what I really want is one that can highlight the background of a confiditional segment.

    soemthing like:

    IF ($a > $B_){

    blha blah blah

    yadda yadda

    etc etc.

    $a=41;

    echo "Thanks for all the fish!";
    } ELSE{

    echo "No soup for you!";

    }

    In my editor it would highlight the variables and the strings and the conditional. What im looking for is something that would highlight the stuff in between the brackets? I just think it would make it alot easier to see my code flow that way.

    So do any out there exist? Thanks.

    Syn!

    http://syn.sourceforge.net/

    It does bracket matching, handles multi-line PHP strings correctly, and more! Get the 2.1.0.45 build because 2.1.0.46 is a bit buggy.

    I couldnt download 2.1.0.45 cuz it was taking FOREVER.. I got .46 and started playing around with the sytax highlight. It seems pretty cool.

    I noticed a couple things though. The code block highlight feature is nice. I like how when you click on one curly bracket it shows you its partner highlighted as well. What i srota had in mind was highlighting the entire selection. Oh well, i'll take what it has to offer so far.

    On thing that sux is when i'm using SQL syntax in a php doc it doesnt auto highlight that sytax. It only highlights SQL syntax when the filetype is .sql. Maybe i'm doing something wrong and not setting it up right. Do you know if i can have it so that i can see php and sql syntax highligted in the same file?

    Thanks though, its a neat editor.

    SIDE NOTE: Is it me or is sitepoint going slow as hell? maybe its my end.

    The only thing I don't like about Syn is it isn't really being developed (or it's being developed slowly). The last point release was in 2003. However, despite this, I think it is still the best, feature- and performance-wise, for me.

    that dude's a freak, he updates like weekly :/
    lol he's at version 3.0.6

    I remember trying it out when it was like 2.5?

    vhogarth... if you're not sensitive about your resources, you can run a free personal license of Zend it runs ok, extremely watered down version, but still has good features.

    Just a comment about PHP Designer. It's my favorite so far. Closest to Zend I can find without the cost, and I don't need to run it through java!
