This is a game I sometimes play with friends of mine, because we are mostly all movie enthusiasts.

Suddenly, in the middle of unrelated conversation, one of us will say a quote from a movie, and then will say "What movie?" and everyone else has to guess what movie the quote came from, and if you can, who said it (name of character).

Here's a couple to start with. They're easy because I don't know how much you know about movies.

"I wrote them down in my diary so I wouldn't have to remember them." What movie?

"My mind is going. I can feel it." What movie?

Yes! HAL, from "2001: A space odyssey" dir. Stanley Kubrick. Did you know this was the first movie ever to have a fully compiled soundtrack? Nowadays tons of movies use pre-existing music for their score.

Feel free to post some more quotes if you want to, because we could probably have a few at a time.

This sounds fun, OK, here's my three. First person to reply with the right answer gets nothing at all. They're all a tad old but not really that obscure:

"Help! Help! There's a peck with an acorn pointed at me!" What movie?

"Is there a rest stop on the information super-highway? I've gotta go potty!" What movie? (Tricky!)

"And I have the power to destroy the spice, forever!" What movie? (Easy peasy)

    Enjoy

Yes, a very regrettable trend IMHO. Directors just don't seem to appreciate the power with which music can support allegory as much anymore. Tim Burton / Dany Elfman (Batman, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands) are one contemporary exception to the trend. My all time favourite movie scorer is Ennio Morricone. I hope as a film student you will be looking into his scoring of westerns - wow, what an icon!

I was going to write something here about my thoughts on the soundtrack to 2001 and whether not having an original soundtrack was a strength or weakness of the film. However, the whole movie is too much of a monumental enigma for me to ever be able to reach any conculsions on any aspect of the way it is told. So I will just observe that in a sense Richard Strauss had written the opening theme for the movie in that both he and Kubrick are telling Nietchze's philosophical story "Also Sprach Zarathustra".

Sorry Ady, I don't know any of those. So I'll throw one more into the pot:

    Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

How about this one then (all one quote):-

"You need to go gargle, Funky."
    "It's STINKY, STINKY, not FUNKY"
"Stinky, funky, smellahellabad, it's ALL the same."

My all time favourite movie scorer is Ennio Morricone.
If there is one movie that ever achieved greatness through a compiled score it would be 2001, but as you mentioned its subject matter was particularly suitable to Richard Strauss' work. What about the waltzes of Johann Strauss, particularly the now infamous "Blue Danube"? The enormous space vessels, their motion and tempo have been carefully choreographed to compliment this. This, as well as the movie's three movements - what do you feel about this?

Ennio Morricone is quite a fascinating composer. I know him best from his work on "The Mission", although his Western themes are well loved throughout our land....
    Cheers.

Here's a couple more quotes for your enjoyment:

"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster".

"They call it a 'Royale with cheese'".

That's because they use the metric system - Pulp Fiction. The first one sounds like a Tarrantino (sp?) too.

Here's another one. If you know the first one I threw in above then you will probably know this one too:

What have the Romans ever done for us?

mmj's first one was from Goodfellas,
freakysid's first was from Holy Grail, followed by Life of Brian.

    OK, how about this.

Yes - I got the life of Brian one but the Holy Grail one escaped me.

    Here is one:

"Can anybody tell me what's wrong with this picture?"

(it may have been copied by subsequent movies...)

Here's one from a movie I saw recently...

"What is your name...or do angels not have names, only beautiful faces?"

Can't think of any others right now, I'll post more if I remember.

A Knights Tale - I just saw it on friday.

This one is for everyone who grew up in the 80's, one of my favorite movies when I was a kid... actually I'll do 2 since I loved em both.

    "Daniel, Use your exo-suit"

    "Hey.... You.... Guys...."

oh and a classic, if you've never seen it you should

    "Anybody want a peanut?"

3 from my favorite actor, different movies

"When I was in that barber shop quartet in Skokie Illinois..."

"What I've done will be studied..." (might not be exact but close enough)

"Okay Honey, I'll be whatever you want me to be..."

I am a Kevin Spacey fan!

    Your quotes come from:

    1. The Usual Suspects (Verbal Kint)
    2. Seven (John Doe)
    3. American Beauty (Lester Burnam)

Those first two movies are extremely interesting, as Kevin Spacey's true character is not revealed until the ending of the narrative. This has probably contributed to Kevin Spacey's cult following, and Fincher's decision to keep his role in Seven a secret, not even to show him on the movie poster or video/dvd cover, or publicity.

The third one is a guess - hope I guessed correctly.

    hmmm..

    Here's one:

"I think it would be fun to run a newspaper"
note: This line is often attributed to the wrong character. If you know who actually does say this line in the movie, I will give a prize.

    another:

    "His name is Robert Paulsen"

    and don't forget

"I wrote them down in my diary so I wouldn't have to remember them". - a prize for whoever gets this.

"men like you built the hydrogen bomb"

Seeing as you are a Kubrick fan, I'll have a guess and say "Dr Strangelove (or how I learnt to stop worrying and love the bomb)".

Wow - are there some new smilies?

    "Daniel, Use your exo-suit"
I'm going to take another wild guess (because I haven't seen the movie) and say Ghostbusters.

Sorry freakysid - this one is not Kubrick.

I don't think I'd call myself a Kubrick fan as such, but I'd certainly be in line to see anything he does.

I think you may be queing by yourself given that Kubrick has now voyaged to the other side of the star-gate to linger with the overmen.

    Yes I suppose so...

Memories of "Eyes Wide Shut" have come flooding back to me now.

I suppose it just goes to show that I'm not that much of a Kubrick fan...
