I want to follow the recommendations in Chapter 8 of Yank's book for restoring our MySQL database. However, our site and our MySQL database are on a shared server and our host cannot turn on update logs by username. If they turn update logs on for the whole server, the drives would quickly fill up.

They suggested that I create by own version of the update logs by modifying my PHP code such that every time a query is issued, the query command is written to a local file on our site.

Is there a "work around" for shared MySQL servers or do I have to add some PHP everywhere I access the database?

If I do have to make these changes to my PHP code, is there a simple way to do so?
