    How do you pronounce OOP?

    I've always been surious if OOP is an acronym or not. I pronounce it as an acronym (poop without the p), but is that right?

    I say O O P cause you shouldn't pronounce acronyms. Seems like you cant if its more five characters for some reason. I.e. Scuba, Fubar and Snafu.

    That's the point of an acronym. That's why there's the big stink over <abbr> vs. <acronym>

    Pronouncable = Acronym
    Non-Prouncable = Initialism

    Even though it's missing the P, it's still POO backwards.

    for those of you that chose the first option... "oop" .. ooooooooop? Like soooooooooouuuuup? or snoop D-O-double-G? seriously?

    I call it by its full name -- "object-oriented programming".

    oop? I find that about as irritating as those who pronounce GUI as "gooey". It's very upsetting.

    Actually, I hate to be pedantic, but you should. An acronym is the word formed when you pronounce the sounds of the letters as one word. If you pronounce the individual letters separately, it is not an acronym.

    For instance, LASER, SCUBA and RADAR are acronyms. IBM and HTML aren't.

    Ok, but there must be something about 3 letters ones, cause nobody pronounces CGI, FBI, CIA, etc. (Err, etc. doesnt count )

    Right, as they said - they're not acronyms, they're initialisms. They're not pronounced as words.

    Yeah. They're supposed to be written C.G.I., P.H.P., X.H.T.M.L., R.S.S., C.N.N., B.B.C., C.I.A., F.B.I., etc, right? (Man does that look stupid)

    Mostly O-O-P, but sometimes "object-oriented programming".

    if you think pronoucing it like i and young twig do is a bit left field then you better stay far away from university's then because about 70% of programming lectures in my experience say "OOP" not Oh Oh Pee

    just my 2 cents

    "oop" does sound pretty stupid, but... one syllable vs. three? You might as well say "Object Oriented Programming" if you're going to say "O-O-P."

    "Gooey" is stupid. "Oop" doesn't seem nearly as stupid, though.
