New Web Site Idea needs Database guidance

I want to put together a Web Site that aggregates niche text information.
I have to start somewhere so I am posting my initial questions here, in hope of some expert guidance and education.

I would like web site visitors to subscribe monthly to search the information.

So I have some questions.

Would I need a web host that provides a database?

What would be a fairly simple database application to use for this type of searching?

How can I import data and categorize it?

Is there a Search Site or Search Database application that you can recommend?

What else would you recommend?

I have an idea of what you want to do, there seems to big a big fad with "niche" markets in the on-line marketing op's communities lately.

I would say PHP/MySql would fit your needs, depending on how much info you are talking about storing and the number of subscribers should determine your hosting plan.

Do you presently have this info in a text file or spreadsheet or something? Or do you plan to manually add it as you build the site?
