    Common Design Recommendations & Tips

Hello everyone. I have created a lot of sites, and I've learned a great deal, but usually there is always something more to learn.

If you have a tip/recommendation that you've learned, regardless if it's common knowledge, please post it.

I'm sure I've missed out on some very common web design tips.

    Examples:
Images per page at X amount of KB
    META tags
    Alt Text
    Lengthy articles & pages

do you add titles to your links, input fields etc? It's a good idea.

Heh, I figured I'd find something new. No, I don't add title's to input, and rarely to links.

What do you mean by "adjusting link weights"?

Hey again. I am building another site. While working on it, I was wondering if I should place titles on all my navigation links?

Do your "homework" before coding out a site. i.e. Take time to put pencil to paper and draw out the designs and work out naming conventions, taxonomy and colors etc... If you are doing this for someone other than yourself, a whole lot of time and frustration can be saved reviewing your paper(s) and getting good feedback to start with.

    yes you should

Adding titles to your links will help with both accessibility and search engines. Note that the text contained within your <a> tags is very important to search engines.

    Here's a cool tip:

When creating a fixed width site for the most common screen resolution which is 800x600 these days, make sure your website does not stretch further than 760 pixels from the left edge of the browser (this is for IE, haven't checked other browsers recently). This provides the maximum amount of space without incurring that dreaded left to right scrollbar when an 800x600 user is surfing a site (at full screen)...

Making sure your site is compaitble with all major problems, by using an html validator is usually important and overlooked in some occurances.
