    Forum/Message Board Help

I have been resently thinking about designing a message board, I don't need to know hoe to build one, just what to use. I am am reasonably good with HTML but I doubt thats what I need to use for message boards. If you could point me in the right direction I would be very thankful.

    Hi Patrick,

Message borads like PHPBB and vBulletin are pretty much plug-n-play these days. You might have to create a new database though, and edit the configuration php file to fill in the connection details.

If you want to heavily modify the forum script I guess knowledge of PHP might be necessary.

To modify the default template, knowledge of html is probably all that's necessary.
If you have cpanel on your hosting you can set PHPBB up automatically from there and play around with it.

Thanks, now do those work into the server I am using, and keep my domain name, or do they link to their own server? I have seen a few nice ones that lead to a seperate server and it wasn't was I was looking for.

I've used (mastering skinning customizing participating...)
    Ikonboard (Perl) my first experience
    Invision Board
    Vbulletin
    and PHPBB.com
I advice u to go with the latter one as it is very good, easy to customize and use, it is free, it is getting better every day with a very active community and widespread users, If you need any help with it tell I owned (6 phpBB boards and customized ~20) and this since almost 3 years 'beginnig of 2002'

I use phpbb for they are free and lots of modifications available. Whether phpbb works on your server depends on what you have in there. If I'm not mistaken, you will need php and mysql loaded. You can point your domain directly to your forum or you may create a subdomain for it.

I use vbulletin - good for features and development / support

invision board is also very good

phpbb is a good, clean, simpler solution that is very easy to use

Unless they have a new version out phpbb needs a mod to be search engine freindly.

I would go with invision or vbulletin.

I believe there is a new version of phpbb coming out that intends to compete with invision and vbulletin.

Until then I agree with Duilen - invision or vbulletin are the better choice

I use Wbblite, and it pretty much kicks ***.
Free, some nice mods available, and easily customizable.

well, I would suggest using phpbb or vBulletin, but when phpbb 2 comes out, vBulletin will so be out! one the nice features of phpBB is that it's free, probably why most people use it, so go with phpbb man!
