Installed XP, now laptop screen 1/2 size!

So my friend tells me she's having trouble with her computer so i say bring it over and i'll take a look. first thing i notice is she's running windows me, so I say lets reformat and install xp. I did that and now th screen is 1/2 size! its not really high resolution, but like a thick black border around the small part of the screen that shows the desktop.

this happened to one of my other friends too but he doesn't remember how he fixed it. does anyone have any ideas?

    thanks!

What Nathan said: get the matching video drivers and set the resolution to the define optimal resolution (e.g. 1024x768, 1280x1024, ...)

I would also advice, depending on the brand of the laptop, there is a key that is highlighted with a "LCD/CRT" text on it, which when pressed with the FN key, it can change the dynamics of the screen. That and the key highlighted with "FONT" (if pressed with the FN key), funny things can happen with the screen.
