lynksys router with broadband modem or seperate

I am getting a linksys wireless router and have choosen the WRT54GS. But I also need a modem as well. the WAG54G has this but not the Speedbooster. Would I be better off buying a seperate modem?

I would second that... Definately go for the seperate one, less trouble in the long run. IMO.

Well, tbh I'm not totally familiar with that whole SpeedBooster thingy of linksys' newest products, so it's hard to argue pro or contra, so I will put it in general terms.

Depending on the space you've got for the device(s), the money you want to spend and the general parameters of the use you gotta consider the following:

    1. Do you have enough space for both a modem and a router?
    2. For what purposes will you use the inbuilt wifi?
2a. Should the wifi-part totally replace any wired network or will you have remaining pcs wired?
    3. How often do you transfer large files?
3a. Are you familiar with the speeds of current 54MBit networks and their rapid degradation of the speed with distance to the AccessPoint or Router?
3b. Are you sure that the claimed "35%"-speed increase of the SpeedBooster justified the extra modem?

For me the solution of an all-in-one AP+Modem+Router has worked like a charm eversince my modem died (that's when I made the switch due to the groovy price/performance-ratio). One to think about: Mark talked about "...less trouble in the long run" - I doubt that, as you've got a problem as soon as one device gives out on you (either router or modem) just like you'll have a problem with the all-in-one in case of a defect...Just my 0.02

I was just trying to say that if he has it all in one and it dies he looses the routing capabilities too! Whereas if they are seperate devices, he doesnt.

That's true, but that would be the case too if the router died (in the seperate scenario)...apart from the fact that the routing capability wouldn't be needed if the modem died (seperate scenario)...

I guess both scenarios have their pros and cons...

Ahh, but with an all-in-one device, you can't hook the modem directly to a PC for ISP troubleshooting if it is needed.
