    Debian (Libranet) LAMP setup

I am trying to setup a local server to try out PHP, mysql and apache.
    I am struggling!

I have the book by Kevin Yank "Build Your Own Database Driven Website using PHP and Mysql"

I have followed the instructions to install and it doesn't work.

    I am currently running libranet.

Can somebody please provide me with an idiots guide solution to install Apache 2, php5 and mysql on this distro.

    Thanks

I suggest you put the book's instructions on hold and try:
    http://us4.php.net/manual/en/install.unix.apache2.php

    Then for MySQL:
    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Installing.html

I installed Mysql using synaptic. I then installed apache2 from source following the instructions in the link you gave (Thanks fof that).
When configuring PHP5 i got the error:
configure: error: Cannot find MySql header files under /usr/local/mysql. Note that the MySQL client library is not bundled anymore
    What can i do now?

Will it work if the ./configure line has the correct path to mysql?

    Like:
    ./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-mysql=/path/to/mysql

    Or is php5mysql still needed?

I admit I don't know... dragging my heels on PHP5.

If you're already using Debian, you're making more work for yourself by compiling from source and trying to hunt down binaries. Just use APT---that's what it's there for.

    Code:
    apt-get install apache2 libapache2-mod-php4 mysql-server-4.1
You'll need to enter that command as root, and the dependencies should be sorted out automatically.
