Is it possible for a php script to access this?

For the script that I am creating, I need to access and read a file inside the /var folder (which is at the same level as /public_html). Can it do this?
If it can't, is there a way to copy the file to a file in the public_html folder?

    Hi,

If you have permissions to do that, then yes (at least I think so).

It won't depend only on file permissions, it'll also depend on the values of open_basedir, and if in safe_mode, the ownership of the files.

thanks for the responses, I was able to succesfully convince my host that it was important that I get access to the /home directory
It's kind of scary that they gave me access so easy, actually...
