Dammit, I was about to break the story here!

I'm definitely switching (well, adding) once the tax return comes in. Mac Mini for sure, and if the return is really good this year I might just go for a PBook

Was going to post pictures but just go to apples site.

Some other things introduced... iWork (Keynote 2 and iPages) iPages is a replacement for AppleWorks and Word. Very slick integrates will iPhoto and themes are huge.

Big push for HD this year... iMovie supports it, Final Cut Express, etc

Some REAL nice iPhoto updates... I never really used it before but I will now.

Spotlight is a new searching tool for Tiger... real slick and real fast. Searches content, names, tags. etc of every file and is crazy fast. Also no indexing since its built into the core OS changes take place instantly.

I was able to see the Keynote I would defiantly recommend watching it.. some really cool things that are hard to explain. There was even a small glitch with iPhoto....

I thought they speed-bumped the powerbooks instead.

That was expected though. There are still too many cooling issues with the G5 chip to be putting it into a laptop. I have one of the G5 iMacs and even that will get the fan running a lot to cool it off, and it has a lot more ventable areas than a Powerbook. If they didn't even put it into the iMac mini, you know they still need to do some work on getting it into even smaller spaces.

Despite the G4 processor, the iMac mini still looks pretty slick, especially for the price. The iPod shuffle could be a low-cost solution for those who need something for just working out or don't need to change songs often (I'll have to take a trip to my local Apple store to take a look).

The eMac still has a G4. They're not going to put a G5 in the Mac Mini until way after the eMac gets one.

Well I wouldn't surprised if we see the G6 chip come out late this year or early next year with a G5 in a PowerBook. The shuffle looks great for taking to the gym or on a run, but I don't know if it's right for me. I have a ton of music and I like to take it with me just about everywhere.

The Mac mini might be on my "soon to purchase" list. Not as a desktop machine but as a server. Maybe throw Linux on it (since the Gs handle floating point numbers better than the Intels).

It will definitely be interesting to see how much interest this sparks in the regular consumer to buy Apple products.

I was thinking about picking one up as a media center PC for the living room. It might clash with the XBox though

You can watch the keynote here.

Steve keeps mentioning this is the year of HD video. Maybe the fact there are no new Macs (excluding the Mac mini) is because they are waiting for HD DVD burners to go with Final Cut Pro HD, Final Cut Express HD and iMovie HD.

Does anyone know when the first HD DVD burners are actually due out?

I might pick up a Mini this year. Looks like a fun toy to add to the household. Not sure what use I would have for it but might think of something.

That is a new format war going on with two different incompatible formats and the movie studios choosing sides on which format they want. Right now it is three studios behind Sony's Blue Ray format and 3 Studios behind the DVD-HD format. Sony has more manufacturers lined up as they are a little more formidable than they were back in the Betamax days.

    Sigh. Stupid industry squabbles.

I've only watched it with passive interest; from the little I gather Blue Ray holds more but is a bit more expensive? I think I'd take more space over a little bit more cheapness myself.

It looks good, no doubt about that! Would i buy one? Nope....the actual spec isn't very good and you would need a monitor, keyboard and mouse that would end up putting the spec sky high....considering you would have to get a slick tft or else it would just look crappy.

I agree. I just use a laptop right now; was thinking a desktop might be pretty cool. I'd have to get the monitor and whatnot, but still something to think about.

If I get one, I will just use a KVM switch and use my existing monitor, keyboard and mouse from my PC.
