    Here are my favourites :

    1) Get incoming links to your site. This can be done by submiting to directories, exchange links with other sites, and ofcourse by having a page in your site with linking code ( eg. http://www.thetopsites.net/static/linktous.php?langid=2 )

    2) Create a newsletter. This way you will allways remind your site to your visitors, but you should use it in order to have them back to it. So don't put very big ammount of info in these mailings, just create curiosity so they will come back to your site.

    3) SEO. Maybe this is the best way to increase your traffic. Find some good keywords using a tool like this : http://www.nichebot.com/ and then optimize your site for these keywords.

    4) Toplists. Maybe the most of webmasters do not remember this way of promotion but it is very good, if you find the appropriate toplist for your site.

    5) Post to related forums with your site in the signature. Also post comments to blogs with your url but be carefull not to spam

    6) Maybe a small ppc campaign would be ok for some sites. I am not glad that nothing happened with mine.

The last thing I would like to say that you should NOT submit to FFA, use autosurf programs and buy 'targeted visitors' campaigns because these methods don't work.

    Hi Nikolas,

How do you find your TopList for your site? Would you just Google it?

No I have created it. I don't like the scripts that allready exist, because they are too simple.

Though all the link exchanges will not produce more results but as per my expeience, if you try to add free web directory like dmoz.org or http://www.gnetdirectory.com or many free directories where you can post your link and that will increase traffic as well as page ranking. Try to search in google.com for free web directory.

Using public relations has worked great for me. Everyone thinks that their company is the "best thing since sliced bread." The real gold is when someone else publishes that you are "the best thing since sliced bread.

Ultimately, I think that it is a process of trial and error as you have to find what outreach means with work best for you.

You discourage links in sigs and say they don't work but why? I have had people say most of their traffic comes from links in tragetted forums links

I've found that publishing articles in such sites as www.ezinearticles.com, www.goarticles.com, www.isnare.com etc. produces great results:

First you get a free link on a PR3-PR4 page full of your keywords, which is the best you can get for your seo compaign

Second, you get a decent traffic, because the article will be available from the main page of the site for some time and then the article may rank very well in SE.

Also the article stays there for a long time and so does your link.

IMO, submitting articles is a great way to get both traffic and search ranks!

    contest insurance

Here's an idea I haven't seen on the forum, and that's purchasing contest insurance for some sort of giveaway for your web site. I'm working with a vendor now to determine costs and feasibility, but it's relatively inexpensive.

I'm going to try to do one for people who sign up in my mailing list.

When radio stations started giving away $1 million dollar prizes, I thought it was odd, and then I found out later those promotions are insured and based on certain odds which are low, but attract a high listernship as a result of it.

You can google "contest insurance" to find insurers.

    Hi Consider-This,

Cheers... Oilganic is designed as an easy-to-use-site (hence the big fonts and simple colours) as many of our visitors are not web savi.

The forum platform is a Phpbb system. I love the program and for our needs its ideal. The guys at Phpbb are alway updating and refining phpbb so means we're up with the lastest and is it's free. The install is pretty staight forward, have a chat with you hosting company if you get stuck.

What seems to be working well for me on promoting

What I have found over the last couple of months with promoting my new site is that the following do drive traffic to you:

    1. Keyword optimization in Meta tags and content-rich articles
    2. Regular article publication of some sort on your site with lots of relavent keywords
    3. Write a Press Release and submit it all over the free ones and relavent Blog sites
    4. Adwords Campaign - Jury still out on this one
    5. find directories that offer similar products and have good PR rating
    6. Of all things, Webrings are driving the most sales to my site
    7. Search Engine Saturation (Still in the works)
    8. EBay Auctions (be sure not to list URL in the auction description, but the about the seller page, Auctiva is good for this)
    9. Backlinks from other relavent sites.

Some of these things have really started to work well for me. Just starting out, I don't have many sales yet, but between the Press releases and the Webring traffic I am averaging about 2 new sales a day on my products. I hope that will continue to climb over the next few months. My efforts having only been going on for about two months now.

Oh, and last but not least, mention it in your signature line where possible like this

Make your links search engine friendly

One of the techniques I've read from the great gurus on the web is to make your links search-engine friendly particularly those dynamic pages. So, these engines could crawl and get all your content.

Majority of the visitors who are not familiar with your site will be coming from the search engines. People mostly inquire through internet where a vast information is available.

And that's my problem now. It's very difficult to convert my php mysql pages to these SEF URLs.

I may be right or I may be wrong. Just trying!

At some download-places I was added directly (one was 3dfiles.com). The next day I visited 3dfiles to see if i had any downloads...

I recived many vistors from that since my url is in the logo that appears when you start the screensaver.
Do you guys think i could make a screen saver with the theme of my site, even-though my site itself is not about screen-savers? ( my site is a portal of online widgets, no downloads ). But make the screen-saver real nice, and somehow embed the URL nicely?

Or this would be taken as misleading?

Finding a top sites list in your category really helps...

I've made one for darts websites, which there are way more than you would think. I'm keeping track of the total number of clicks in my site gets and the total number of clicks out from our site. Each month, there is an overwhelming number more out clicks than in clicks. This means that a top 100 site generates a lot more traffic for its visitors than it is getting from its memeber sites.

If any of you guys like the top 100 sites I have and can offer any suggestions for top 100 sites that would be more popular than one about darts, I would appreciate it.

I design minisite graphics and templates for internet marketers , and put
"Graphics by Hypercover.com" on every footer. Those sites bring visitors to
my sites and since then, I stopped markting my site.

It works and still working until today.

    Very interresting forum.
    Nice tips!
But I still feel like trying to make a wave count in that huge ocean which is the web.
