hmm, It was very interesting reading through this entire thread just then.

Looks as though it started back in 2001 and many people were saying Google Adwords was hopeless and that Yahoo had 50% of the search traffic etc... how things have changed

One thing that I didn't see in all the posts was anything about starting a blog. Search engines love blogs simply because of the fact that they are continually updated (usually) with new content... so the spiders have a field day

Blogs are also great since you can have visitors subscribe via RSS... which is basically as effective (if not more) than an opt-in list.

Tip for increasing ezine list subscriptions: On one of my sites I recently instituted a popup like the one used here at SitePoint to offer newsletter subscriptions. Subscriptions have increased probably 500% since then.

We are a travel company and have built a large database of client emails. We're looking to start promoting our discounts using this database. The clients are aware of us and obviously have booked with us at one point in the last five years.

We've been looking at email marketing software to promote ourselves to old and new clients, however we've found that existing emails in our database must go through a "opt-in validation" process before we can send out emails to these clients. From what I understand these will be plain text, unattractive emails that could be confused as not important (does anyone read anymore). This obviously defeats the purpose as our visual identity is not incorporated into the opt-in email resulting in possible disregard of the email.

Does anyone know of software that bypasses this opt-in validation process with an existing email database to insure that our clients DO in fact get our very first email offer? They of course should have the ability to opt-out by clicking a link.

Having a lot of inbound links will really give your site traffic. But remember, inbound links must also be relevant to your site.

I'm co-owner of a site called hip-hoptops.com and we're looking into buying traffic, just 10K visitors to start off and we were considering banner advertising on website that would drive targeted visitors (real-hiphop.com)...we've recently tried to become listed under Dmoz, submitted our site to google, are in the process of submitting to froogle and yahoo, and are considering PPC advertising...we've followed google's "guidelines" for SEO and have not seen any increases in traffic.

any suggestions?

One thing that surprised me was that pictures work really well. I had posted pictures to illustrate certain things, and when I checked where my hits on those pages were coming from, it was the images.

But I think you have to have captions, because where I drew illustrations and didn't have room for captions, the hits didn't come in the same way.

I get also great traffic from search engines but I get more relevant and targeted visitos from my partners.

Hi, I am new to martketing and not in the webdesign business. But did build my site myself so want to try to tweak it to the max. I have built a new service site but am very wary of posting whre it may be condidered spam.

By newsgroups are we talking about things like Deja - I have not used Deja for many years are there others which are now more popular?

I think look out for decent site with good traffic and alexa ranking of 50000-70000 and a wholesale banner ad-rate (monthly basis, no fixed displays) of less than $300 per month. It worked for me when i started my fun related site in 2000.
