    Snow...

Freaking weather. Before this season, it was 18 months since the last appreciable rains here in the California Desert. Today it is snowing. Last week when the weather forecast said snow down to 2500 feet (I live at 2600), there was nothing but rain. Today the forecast says snow down to 4000 feet and it is snowing on my front lawn as we speak.

Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't hate the stuff. Probably going to have to break out the brandy for my coffee soon.

I honestly think that the meteorologists in California don't know the difference between a cold front and a cold beer.

Wayne, I feel your pain. I despise snow. Always have (I despise it less now that I have 4WD, tho). And I live in NJ, so the flurries you have now is just an inkling of what's to come for me this winter. Been trying to convince the wife that Arizona is the place to be. Not making much headway there, tho.

It snowed about a foot on my drive way yesterday. Next to the driveway's up to about 4-8 feet depending on the area (as the foot of the driveway where the plow is has a lot more). When you live up here, snow is normal. I went out in a sweatshirt/jeans today and it's -5

Meh, it's only snowed twice this winter you baby

Me, I'll take snow over rain anyday. As long as I don't have to drive anywhere that is

You haven't been around for the messy stuff yet. You'll see it coming and probably head back to Florida faster than you can say, "snowball fight".

Right now it is snowing pretty heavy in the frontyard and it is not in the backyard... Freaking weather. If I wanted snow, I wouldn't live in the Southern California Desert. I am supposed to be planted roses next week and getting the garden ready.

I live in Canada. So you can all just be quiet and take it.

    Except for you, someonewhois.

    Represent.

That was some fun snow yesterday... especially when you live downtown, but work out in Kanata. It was still relatively tame, but I hate traffic.

It isn't really our fault that you have decided to inflict such unwarranted pain on yourself.

One good thing about the rain and snow we are getting is that at least there will be water to drink next year and the orchards and farms will produce better crops. Probably not good for the local onion crop right now though and at least the pear, peach and apricot trees haven't bloomed yet.

The mountains above my house, where the ski resorts are, are supposed to get up to 6 feet of snow out of this storm. The Sierra ski resorts of Mammoth and Tahoe have received something like 12-18 feet of snow in the last week and should get almost the same from this storm.

Interesting thing is we have a 3 year old cat here that has never seen snow. He goes outside regularly, even in the rain. When he asked to go out this morning, he took one look, shook his head and then jumped on the couch to lay down.

My dog does something similar. When I need to take her out for a walk on a cold day, she runs out, does her business, and is back inside in about 45 seconds. On a warm day she could be out there for hours if I let her

I live in Buffalo NY. It's don't hate snow (I have grown accustomed to it), but it really annoyed me that we had over a foot and a half yesterday, and school wasn't even cancelled.
I'm sure where you live, where cactuses are more common than snowstorms, everything would be cancelled with an inch

Snow is fantastic, I love it. It's just the cold weather that sometimes accompanies it which sucks. The past few days Fargo's had temps of -28ish degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chills even colder than that. That's the stuff that isn't too fun. But snow is fun, especially when it's on an inclined slope in which you can propell yourself downwards on skis.

When I lived in Maryland for two years a snowflake would be cause to declare a state of emergency for the whole state.

It really depends on the conditions. Snow is rare here on the desert floor but it isn't an unknown phenomena. There are ski resorts about an hour away (I can see them from my house on a clear day) and the Gorman Pass of Interstate 5 is about an hour in the opposite direction. It isn't uncommon to wake up the morning after a storm and see snow dusting all the foothills around us.

It is the ice that causes the most problems. School hasn't been cancelled today but if it wasn't Saturday tomorrow, they would be cancelled then. Even though I live 45 northeast of Los Angeles, the community pretty much shuts down after 11 p.m. and all the roads will freeze tonight and end up with an inch of ice on them in the morning. That is where the problem starts because the city doesn't have snow plows or trucks to deliver salt, they have to be brought in from outside the area or rented, usually from the outlying mountain communities.

Oh yeah, I know about that all too well. I went to college for 4 years up in the Fargo/Moorhead area and there is no such thing as a non-cold winter up there (hell, the school year usually ends before all the snow is melted!). Even when it doesn't snow that much, the land is so flat that there is zero visibility because of wind blowing the snow around (I found myself in the ditch 3 times because of it). Once I saw that they had built-in barracades for closing the highways up there I knew I was in for a rough time.

Needless to say, being in the Twin Cities now and not having much snow yet ... I'm not complaining. It will show up eventually, I can wait a while.

Oh really? Which college you go to?

And yes, it takes a special kind of man to live here (read: a stupid one). But it's kinda fun. I was kinda suprised as I flew through the Twin Cities a week or two ago, you guys only had a dusting so far. You'll get it soon enough.
