Put the code somewhere before the first time you need to use $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']. Top of the file would be OK.

Technically it's not Windows, but IIS that does this. I'm pretty sure that var is there on Windows running Apache.

yes i am running Apache on WinXP and $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] is there. i think he would better be off with creating a function and putting in a file like config.php that he includes in every file and where evr he needs this var he would just call the function. i am just thinking but not sure whether that'd be practical

That brings up a quandry that I can't comment on. While I am developing this new site I am traying at the same time to package the coding so I can drop into another site. Would the config.php be better serverd if this is taking place JR or HC?
