    Allow reputation in General Chat!

Since I've been at Sitepoint, reputation cannot be given in the General Chat forum. I think Mattias may have ruined the privelage with this thread , but as reputation is a sign of respect here at Sitepoint, I believe that what you do in the general chat section is also a measure of your respect here. Someone may be an expert in, say php, but be a total jerk in the genereal chat, and his reputation would be really high, although he is in fact the most hated person at sitepoint.
Vote here- do you think reputation should be allowed in the general chat section?

There have definitely been a lot of times that I've wanted to give someone rep in this forum. Instead, I just find another post by them and say "Giving you rep for this post in general chat -> ", or I end up just not giving it, which is a shame.

    Edit: Just read the post.

    *looks at PHP guru badge.*
    *looks at 2 rep pips*
    Bah.

I'm voting for it for the same reasons as the previous 2 states.

And for the 2 people that, as now, have voted no...how about you post why?

    Yeah, I noticed that too.

For example, now I wanted to add to someonewhois's reputation

Also reputation is not shown in General Chat posts.

I voted no because I feel that General Chat should not be a focal point of the community. By not allowing post counts or reputation, it prevents that from happening.

I actually agree with Wayne. The Rep system is all the more valuable for the fact that reputation is given to a person relating to their help/advice in web related areas.

If people started dishing out rep for things like poor taste in underwear Mattias and Vinnie would not enjoy the kudos they deserve

Although I jave wanted to give rep in general chat before I have voted no as well. As Wayne said, the focus of the rep system is for the great discussions and help members give in the other forums.

If rep is used to measure how helpful/skilled someone is, then it should stay off in GC. If you really think a post here warrants some rep you could always do what someonewhois said.

I'd rather if my reputation depended on my posts in the Design and HTML areas rather than General Chat.

On second thought, it would be kind of nice to be able to give Vinnie negative rep in GC.

If you saw how much negative rep he can throw around you might think twice about that.

Negative rep is half of normal rep, isn't it? That's like, 11 or 12 points for Vinnie, eh?

Stymiee's right. I wouldn't last too long in a negative rep shootout with Vinnie. I don't even think I'd get my gun drawn.

You'd have to get Mattias, Jeremy, Wayne, and a few others to side with you, then maybe you'd be able to take out Vinnie. Especially if you have the first shot, as then he'll have a lower rep, meaning (minutely) less rep power points

Why must every rep thread center around Mattias and myself?

    Edit:

By the way, I get another rep point next month

Man this place is going to the dogs. Going to have to get Nicky a bullwhip for her birthday so she can whip people into shape.

Providing that mental picture would have gotten you 20 to 30 rep votes if it were allowed here. Just something to think about.....

Possibly... Still don't think it should be here.
