It's kinda strange, cause if it stands for 'php: hypertext preprocessor' what does the php in that stand for? it's kinda like an infinite spiral!

I've heard it described as a "recursive acronym" -- whatever that means. It can also stand for "Personal Home Page", but not officially -- I've heard that mentioned as one of the original uses. It's all kind of clouded.

When php2 first came out, it was called "Personal Home Pages/Form Interpreter", thus the name php/fi, when php3 came out they loist the fi part, and php just stuck. Now people try to associate php with Hypertext Preprocessor, cause thats what it is, but its not where php came from. This info comes directly from the source, Rasmus Lerdorf himself, read about it here:

    http://www.php.net/manual/phpfi2.php#history

    Hi

Rasmus came to a meeting of the PHP users group in San Francisco, and that is also what he said at the meeting.

I did not join the group until the next month. But here is a guy who will take the time to speak to a group. Really neat.

It's just like how GNU is "GNU's Not Unix"... You have to love recursion..

It originally did stand for Personal Home Page.
Love it? Hate it? Helpful? Useless?

Before it went to PHP Hypertext Preprocessor, some people wanted to call it Professional Home Page instead of Personal Home Page.
