I'm curious whether there is a better way to set up my top border/navbar:

the blue lines represent table cells, and the green lines are tables. i'm using quite a few spacer images and empty cells in there to achieve the layout i want. is there a better way other than css?

all i want to know is what program are you using to layout your code? It looks interesting. I don't recall seeing one that gives you table and cell dimensions right on the page like the screenshot you are showing.

That particular screen shot is taken in layout mode...

    ah...that explains it.

    1) I have DW3, not 4

    2) I don't use it.

What kind of advice were you looking for? Advice on graphics/layout etc?

I think it looks good. I especially like the way the searchbox and links on the right expand...

The links in the blue table underneath though, I have some opinions on:

I think the text in these is a bit too big. I they stand out a little too much. Usually, the links such as these are smaller than the text in the top header area. They should also have underlines, but I am assuming that you'll add these later.

    That's just my opinion though.

i'm not really looking for advice about the graphics or what the layout looks like. what i'm looking for is how to lay it out. i've never really read anything on setting consistent layouts with tables, and i was just wondering if the way i did this, multiple cells, spacer images, is the correct way.

In that case I'd say you're definitely on the right track.

I'm not sure what dreamweaver 4 is like or how much control it gives you, but you have done something that many people haven't and you have created a table-based navbar that stretches to fit the available space.

Obviously I cannot see how many nested tables or spacer images you've used, so it would be worth testing it.

I tend to keep my own work simple, without too many spacer images. That said, my brand new design has spacer images in it.
