Re: Nutty Mary Whitehouse type - even I, Mr anti guns, war and nastiness hippy type think that you are a tad over-sensitive 7stud. hmmmm "7stud", what was that about bad taste?

Re the bulletin thing, I am very interested in developing in this area so would LURVE to know the actual differences - are all these extra functions everyone needs? Or could it be that smaller enterpises can happily get by without them?

If you can illustrate the differences vb & Ikonboard gurus, I'd appreciate it. (& any advice on other cheap/free equivelants)

    Cheers

it is hard to answer this until ikonboard 3 is out. personally i love vbulletin a lot and vb2.0 is just brilliant. Ikonboard does look very good but until we can get our hands on a copy it is hard to come up with a pros/cons list for both, and as far as ikonboard2 v vbulletin goes, vb wins hands down.

Censorship indeed and actually I'm not even amazed about it.

Yes, "Freedom of speech" is a nice idea, but does it work on forums or messageboards? No. If someone goes out of the line then well, I guess appropriate actions will be taken

v3 don't know, i don't think they do. There are still quite a lot of bugs left on their bug tracker (quite a cool little script) but as they dwindle then i guess that is when they will release it.

    vbulletin v ib2.

    - mysql (ib2 uses flat files, ib3 some new database type thing they have made which i am looking forward to seeing).
    - custom styles
    - unlimited forum depth
    - masses and masses of customization
    - and more features

as i havn't used ib2 for a long while i can't remember exactly what comes as standard with it so there are lots of things in vb that i take for granted. Basically go try ib and see if you can do what you can here at sitepoint.

If money is not too much of a problem get VB. If time is a problem, get VB if money is an issue and time is not then wait for IB3.

p.s. IB2 is still better than UBB (IMHO!) so go for that before paying anything for UBB.

Thanks Padders. Wanna get started on the project around end of May. I'll take your advice and wait until then - if no ib3, I'll fork out for vb.

    vB use PHP/MySQL

    IkonBoard use Perl and Flatfiles

    Winner:
    -------

vBulleting because it has ultimate features, hacks, speed and ease of use.

IB is slow like UBB and if you have cgi problems (blank pages) then it will produce loads of errors while PHP won't (vB) have errors!

They could have left my original question at least..

IB3 will be out "when it's ready".

Off the topic kind of, but what's the deak with those blank pages with CGI anyways?

um i am an adamant vb supporter but cgi problems??? if the script dosen't work then getting an error is a good thing! and vbulletin does product error messages if that is what you mean.

Ikonboard 3 will not necessarily use flat files, they have abstracted all the data storage so you can use a mysql class if you want. As for speed you can't tell yet because it has not been released and tested on boards big enough (although ikonbaord itself sails away with 125 users online when i have seen it).

If you are referring it to ib2 then yes i agree, ib3 is fundamentally different to ib2 from what i can tell. wait is all we can do to see how it turns out

    wow...

I mean I used ikonboard v2 b4... well alright the speed is definitely slower with vb.... but I kind of appreciate ib2...

It's a very good board actually.... You can do almost the same thing as vb with ib2... and I never face any problem with ib2 yet... it's working fine.

And I see the major different here is just the flatfile and the speed....

And the best thing is that you can do msg archieving and user ranking ... I appreciate it a lot.... and the best of it.. is that it's free ....

I like VB very much... but just cannot affort the cost here ... so ... in my case I appreciate ib2 for such a good forum board ..

Well the major difference between VB and IB2 is the templates, you can basically make VB look exactly how you want, so much so that it's impossible to tell it's a vb

I hear VB3 will be template (skins?) driven though, so that should make the fight a bit fairer.

at the moment of course VB also has a lot more features.

    Anyway, that's me.
