    What Works for You?

I would just like to get a general concensus on what promotional methods have worked well for you, so that other members, who may be new to promoting their sites, can have a reference on what has worked for others. If you've had good success with a particular promotion effort, I'd like to know about it:
    • What the promotion type is (i.e. Adwords)
    • What your site is about (all sites may not have the same success rate if they are about vastly different subjects)
    • How long you've been promoting this way
    • How long until you saw results
    • What you wish you would have done before promoting this way (i.e. targetting your keywords differently, or something like that..)
This way, we can all learn from a central thread - what works in your particular industry and what doesn't.

I think word of mouth is almost always the best for any type of small business.

    At work:
Partnerships, advertising (magazines), trade shows, and SEO.

They all get pretty quick results I have to say, except for SEO. SEO took a while, but eventually it worked out very well. It just took some time to rise to the top.

Indeed. I think word of mouth/refferals is one of the best way to build a strong community. But that`s just my opinion. There could be better methods out there to build a big community

I've set up two customer's sites with Google Adwords and the response has been extremely positive for both of them. One company went into the black because of it. The other one has seen a tremendous growth in their business (one sale paid for a years worth of adwords for them).

For my business I used to use adowrds but stopped a few years ago. Word of mouth has sustained me ever since.

Interesting to see that "buying traffic" is currently ranked higher than Adwords.

If I might ask, what types of sites do you have success buying traffic from? I'm aware that 90+% of those sites are complete crap. How do you find the good ones that convert?

The one biggest thing for my site is word of mouth. I would not be where I am today without it. I have hardly advertised and I only have a little bit of partnerships. SEO has helped some, but word of mouth trumps that. If you can capitalize on that it's the start of a great site.

Word of mouth has worked for me. I've tried a few PPC search engines, but it didn't work out well.

Depnds on several factors. It's a bidding system so if the keywords you are targetting are very competitive (like 'web hosting') you'll pay more then if your keywords are not competitive (like 'green boxer shorts'). With adwords you can set a dily limit of how much you want to spend, too, so you don't have to worry about it breaking your budget.

regarding adwords: it probably depends on the industry but what do you guys think about displaying ads on partner sites vs just on google.com? has anyone compared the returns in both cases?

I agree, especially if your product is worth talking about / is a great product. I also think that the type of business and your target market makes a difference too.

Are there any min. $$ down on AdWords?
For a old site of mine, here's what I did.

    - Word of mouth, SEO
    - Specific Video game, Super Power 2
    - Close to eight months
    - Maybe a month or so
    - Perhaps buying some adverts, like AdWords, etc.
After promoting, my wish is that I never sold the site

Word of mouth works wonders, even online. It got to the point
where maybe 2/5ths or so of most SP2 questions got directed to my site.

I somewhat had a partnership with the developers, but not
something like they'd have with larger game sites. But I did get
a good share of info the rest were cut out of

If you choose the right affiliates, that can help out a lot.
I also agree that word of mouth is also very good.

Personally the thing that works best for me is word of mouth. I seem to have a nack for promotion and making things to where people will tell their friends even without making a referral section. I guess you could say my specialty would have to be promotion
