I work for a state agency and we need a content management system.

We need one that will handle the management of a site with severl hundred pages and several hundred pdf documents. We also need one that can publish the site in multiple languages.

If anyone has any suggestions or experience with them, please let me know.

    thanks

To be totally honest, your agency might be best off going with a large commercial Content Management System such as:

    http://www.Vignette.com

    or

    http://www.ncompasslabs.com/home.htm

They are fairly pricy (I think they start at about $75,000.), but they offer so many options that it becomes easy to manage a huge site. Many large websites use them. Just look for any URL's that have commas in them (close to the end) and that is a Vignette run website.

NCompass Labs is much cheaper and they seem to have a good handle on the way things work. I think they start at about $25,000.

Keep in mind that the cost of software like this might be a really good investment as you could still be using it 2-3 years from now.

Don't go for Mediasurface. My company use it and it's more of a hindrance than a help - in fact the part of the site I'm responsible for hasn't been fully functional in almost 6 weeks thanks to problems with Mediasurface. I have no idea what Vignette is like - I have a friend who works for them and says it's excellent but then, he would s

Vignette has a great product, but the licensing fees are ridiculous. Plus, from the sounds of it you don't need anything that robust. You might want to check out Atomz's Publish service which they launched earlier this year. It is fairly easy to use, relatively powerful, and isn't quite as steep.

You might find that hiring a programmer to work on a custom solution for you might be more cost effective and perhaps more effective, since you don't require much.

If you have the budget for Vignette, then by all means go for it. It's a nice piece of software. But I recommend you explore all your options first before blowing your budget.

I've seen the prices for Vignette, and they are out of our range. But that is the type of product we are looking for.

    Anybody heard of:

    Berlitz
    Gauss
    Pixelera
    Haht

Did you look at NCompass Labs? I saw them give a demo and it looked very impressive. They had Word-type editors built directly into their page. All you do is type in the text, click the bold button and voila.

Plus their prices are much cheaper than Vignette.

my company worked on the front end of a site that implemented vignette and the client has found it to be nothing but trouble. it was very hard to integrate, incredibly expensive to buy, and incredibly expensive to maintain.

have a look at these guys:
    http://www.atomz.com

they are currently limited to page publishing and site-search capabilities only... but if you're just looking for a solution for publishing content through a user-friendly interface and don't need to incorporate user personalization, or any of the more complcated things that some of the more expensive products like vignette do... this type of thing might be the way to go.

yeah, vignette is rather hefty. My brother is a consultant for them in London and I am still trying to get him to explain to me why they are so pricey.

I've had a tour/demo of Atomz Publish and it looks really solid... I have personally met the people behind it in-person too.
