    Canadian Content (dot net)

    Hey fellow sitepointers

I've recently redesigned http://www.canadiancontent.net/ from an older style I had originally created in 2002 ( old version: http://web.archive.org/web/200402081...ancontent.net/ ).

I'm looking for tips on little tweaks and possibly any suggestions for Search Engine Optimisation around the site.

BTW, the site has finally taken on a SLSF scheme

    Hey Chris.

Good job mate, I really like it! The only thing that kind of bother me a little bit is that top story bit, To me it seems to throw of the page! I like the navigation at the top and the header is really good yet simple.

    Good Job!

both the old version and the new version are kinda ho-hum and way too busy for my liking

but the new one has a horizontal scrollbar which is quite annoying

Too bad, it's a content site with 112,000 pages indexed

Horizontal scrollbar as in you're still using 640x480 resolutions? Turn it up to 1024x768 minimum and you don't have that issue anymore

Thanks for your reply mark_W. I'll look into the Top Story bit.. did you mean the slanted text there? Or just the whole thing with the photo? Unfortunately current story is ugly Dick Cheney

    I am using firefox with a resolution of 1024 x 768 OOL Cable 1000mhz 512mb ram.

I really like the template and all, however, are you using a background image which is watermarked? I ask this because on your main page scrolling down is very slow. This is due to the fact that there has got to be a background image which it must have been watermarked. Perhaps you should try other options because thats just annoying and very hard to scroll and read the news. [ It's heard to scroll, I just jump to the next website and won't visit your site again. ] **Thas my opinion**

I love the way phpBB was integrated with that custom style, just great. Here is what I found:

Minor tweaks like those two are what keeps me away from website for good. I understand you can't please every visitor but the more you do the better.
    Great Job overall!

Note: This site is NOT a template per say.. Although I technically use templates in my coding, it's not a premade site.

    Heya YCTraining!

Firstly, welcome to Sitepoint! Hope you get lots of useful information from this site.

Regarding watermarks: There are no watermarked images on the page. That's strange you would come across an issue like that. I just opened it up in Firefox1 and don't see what you saw. Strange.

Regarding forums: Thanks for pointing that out. I've noticed that before and have not had the time to go and figure out what it was then change it on most templates (most pages use that style). I'll get around to that soon. Thanks for getting me on that

    Edit: Fixed the Mozilla issue.

this is SO apparent from the home page -- NOT!

    Thumbs up

Thanks Chris W. My first post. ;-)

It must have been the setting on my "other" computer. I switched to my gaming system ( Specs: 2600 Mhz. Opt Cable. 1gig ram) and did not have the issue first discussed on my post. Also noticed, as you mentioned, forums are fixed. Sweet . As stated before, I really like your website and looks and feel very professional. Great!

    Good luck!

    **EDIT**

If you note, as you scroll down your gradiente image seems to move also. (firefox)

One thing that does bother me a bit is this image.

    http://www.canadiancontent.net/image...ory-corner.gif

The curve just does not work with the design.

Look at the attached picture, notice the two different shades of blue.

Thanks YC I've fixed that as I never noticed it before.

Unfortunately, the grey gradient does not seem to extend in Mozilla CSS styles.. It shows up fine in IE, I'll see what I can do about that in Mozilla/Opera CSS... It doesn't look bad, though.

silverstrand: I thought the curve looks good and unique. I tried different things in creating the design, but that one looked the best. The site looked a little more dull without it, so I'll play around and see what I can come up with.

that seems rather disingenuous, considering how you reacted when i gave you some

i did a search on your site and let me tell you, no canadian results came up

i went to the advanced search page, http://www.canadiancontent.net/ca/, but it is broken

because of these reasons, i would not bookmark your site, nor would i come back

the design could be great, the design could be poor, that doesn't really matter, what matters is content, and in your case, what you say you are is not what i got

if i wanted dmoz results, i'd go to dmoz

    hardcore enough for you?

That's hardcore enough for me, and thanks for point out those things out I wasn't asking for a "It's cramped and too busy for me". Something constructive.

The site was running a huge search index which was not economical.. So transitioned to dmoz results, I forgot to change a few links which you pointed out: I will fix them soon. I'm working on a different type of search index at the moment so it will change again to an improved version.

r937: Why not check out the forums or tech sections and tell me what you think?
