When I tried to submit a page from my site to altavista, it said the submission failed because my site's server returned a 406 error.

Submitting my root domain is fine, but submitting a folder isn't.

406 error means that the server couldn't return a page of the expected mime type.

I checked the headers for the particular URL, and my host is returning this:

    HTTP/1.1 200 OK
    Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 19:57:32 GMT
    Server: Apache/1.3.6 (Unix) PHP/4.0.4pl1 mod_perl/1.21 mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.2b
    X-Powered-By: PHP/4.0.4pl1
    Connection: close
    Content-Type: text/html

What is wrong? Should the "Type" in "Content-Type" be in lowercase? It shouldn't matter...

Please don't try to submit a page from my site to test (I don't want to spam altavista).

Anyone else having problems submitting their site to altavista?

    Hi All,

I wonder if you pay if you would be having the same problem.

I have had this happen to me. I can always reach my site even when the FTP is acting up but rhe search engine cannot???

I am not saying it is the problem. Just makes one wonder out loud.

When using altavista Australia to submit, I just get an error. It doesn't say which error. When using Altavista USA to submit (I hate those letters and numbers, hehe) it says error 406.

I have viewed my site successfully using a number of different requesting hosts, and a couple of different http request headers. It seems to work just like any other site.

If you are also having these problems, then I'd say that it is a problem with their submit queue. Altavista have been making lots of changes in the past few days.
