can MySQL execute Perl?

I've been looking all over for an answer to this question -- hopefully someone here can help.

Is it possible to use a MySQL trigger or sp to cause execution of an external Perl (or other) script? What I would like to do is make an external script run upon change of a particular field, but I can't find sufficient reference to sps or triggers on MySQL.

stored procedures are a new feature in version 5

however, i don't see anything at mysql.com that suggests you can call an external routine

I've decided to abandon this approach, as much as it pains me to do so... I guess I'll need to spawn new processes from within my PHP instead.

For what it's worth, I still think this would be a good feature for a DB to implement.

Some dbs have it (sql server) and some don't. It can be considered a security risk
