just wondering what people's views are on submitting to search engines before or after you officially launch a site? Or is this a day one activity? What way around have other people tried? Does it matter?

I would say wait... especially submitting to human-approved places like Yahoo! and DMOZ (OpenDirectory), since people won't be as impressed with a site that isn't launched yet. If you use meta tags correctly, you will have a greater chance in getting listed somewhere like AltaVista and Google.

Agreed. What's more, if you submit your site before you launch, most engines will index your *current* content.. so if it says something like "coming soon!" on your Web site, Web spiders will index that as well.

Definately wait until your site has been launched, and the meta tags are configured with your description and keywords. And like I just wrote to someone else... only worry about the top 6 or 7 search engines. Those are where 99.9% of your hits will come from.

    Good luck!
