Question Get an order, have my printer print out the shipping label.

Hey guys I was wondering how I can make it so once I get an order, it is sent to my printer which would print out the shipping label?

This would be the best thing ever. I would dedicate a printer and computer just for it. It would also be a great way to know that I just recieved an order and easily know how many orders I need to ship out.

thanks guys, any help would be awesome.

    Don't know.

Something like this would require client software on your computer that keeps checking the server for new orders and prints them when they arrive. To be honest, though, I kind of fail to see the advantage of having the orders printed in real time. It seems more annoying to me. Plus, the entire system will go straight to hell if a large newspaper or something like that refers to your site. We've had over 1000% increase in order volume during some time periods. If those were not queued in the system, it would quite quckly turn very ridiculous.

The easiest way to do this is this:

    1. Download the order details in some sort of delimited file, many carts/systems offer this and if not its a fairly easy thing to code.

    2. Setup some MS Word Mail Merge functions to format the labels.

    3. When needing to print open up the file in Word, Merge it, and hit print.

This will not print UPS labels or anything fancy like that, just normal address labels, and obviously its not fully automated.

With the delimited file of addresses you could also write a custom application (probably visual basic would be cheapest) to print the labels if you do not want to use MS Word.

I don't how much this makes sense to do.

I take it that your product all weight the same and they can only order 1 right?

Or do you just want to print out the address of the person that orders? Do you then just place stamps on it? It would be more advantageous to just copy and paste the address into a shipping place, like usps, ups, or fedex, and just print out the shipping label and get a tracking number to boot.

Most shopping carts I've used have a field to put in the shipping tracking code as well once the order has been fulfilled and shipped.

A quick solution to just print out shipping labels would probably be to use a dymo label printer, and then just grab all of the shipping address and queue it into the dymo to print out.
