    Site Review Request

Hello, I'm looking for feedback on this sample of a page I'm working on.

I want to make this a fast loading page with no images, gifs etc.

Purpose of site - a simple directory for an everyday commonly used service (sorry, rather not say what).

Audience - probably majority have dial-up connections.

The look I'm going for - light and some-what warm and cheerful.
Simple - easy to follow navigation.

I think this page is pretty much what I'm going after, but I've been staring at it for so long - I'm losing perspective:

    http://pglink.home.comcast.net/test/smallshot.htm

Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Will

I'm not really a fan - as yo say, you'e going for a simple look, but the page has no real organisation or uniformity - currently it looks a bit messy with loads of different clurs strewn across the page. Makes it difficult to concentrate on the site properly.

    Hello,

I have to agree with IceBox -- too much going on, too much chaos. However, I do like your focus on the website visitor ("Where do YOU want to go?", etc.)

    Keep at it!

    A

    1st effort - http://pglink.home.comcast.net/test/smallshot.htm
    2nd effort - http://pglink.home.comcast.net/samples2.htm

Thank you icebox. I wanted the site to feel warm and just a little cheerful, but maybe I agree- that the colors are distracting and take away from my primary goal of a simple, quick loading, user friendly site.

Thank you adent100. Per ice and yourself -I'm reducing the colors. So, maybe my "Where do YOU want to go?, etc." sub headers are helpful in indicating to visitor how the site might be useful / why they want to click on their city - - - to answer those questions.

Useability is very important to me. The site is simply a directory for a commonly used service; not much to it - just a simple directory.

    3rd effort - http://pglink.home.comcast.net/test/samplesmall3.htm
    4th effort - http://pglink.home.comcast.net/test/samplesmall4.htm

    Hi Accdntl,

I think it is coming along -- the reduction in colors (4th and 3rd efforts) has tamed the page a bit. Are the questions (in the middle) hyperlinks, or do they describe what you can find out on the site?

Thanks "A", the only hyperlinks are in menu (directory) and footer.

The questions are for the visitor - to get them to see how the page might be of use to them.

I guess I could change the questions to statements - of - how the page might be of use to them?

I've never built a "professional" page before - so really appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

    Will

I like the idea, it just needs a little more color and pizazz!

I would suggest making it more classy, and keeping the design more consistent. Alot of different colors in the menu usually don't work wery well...

OK, din't see the 5th effort. I'm not a fan of the colors, u have used. Maybe some brown colors would look metter.. Just my opinion anyway...

Looking at version 5 there's no obvious design idea. You'd be better off finding a website with the same functionality and do something similar.

    More color . . . less color . . . more pizazz . . . classy . . . more subdued menu color . . .graphics . . .

Thank you everyone - you are really making me re-examine my prospective site.

I think I'm making progress? slowly.

I don't really understand the site? It is really confusing and I assume would be for anyone visiting the site. It is no problem at all to make a site fast loading with images, just read up on optimizing the images for faster load times. If it wasn't possible to have a page load fast then EVERYONE wouldn't be using images. I think you sould organize it a little better rather then have everything just kinda here and there. That's really all I can think of right now.

The seventh is the best one yet. The header would be better as a graphic, and I feel on my 1280x moniter, everything is WAY too spread out (the text and stuff). I'm also not so sure about the font switching. You could theme the site to your service and add graphics to make it more interesting.

Thank you all for your patient and constructive suggestions.

Thank you Phil for reminding me that not everyone is viewing 800x600 (maybe I'm even in the minority?).

I broke the rule for this forum category by posting a "live page" toward the middle of this thread. I will address screen rez settings challenges in a more appropriate forum (as I should have).

So, its back to posting screen shots:

    http://pglink.home.comcast.net/test/samplesmall7a.htm

If you click on - "click here to see larger image" in above link you will see a full size image screen shot.
The only hyperlinks are in menu (directory) and footer.
The questions are for the visitor - to get them to see how the page might be of use to them.
I'm hoping the colors have a little more harmony to them and that the overall layout appears more balanced?
I will probably eventually give into a img for title header.
I suppose in a sense this is just a "splash screen" / portal .
I want the page to jump up quickly on a shaky 28.8 connection.
The visitor sees that it is a straight forward - no frills - "directory" that provides info such as suggested by the large scattered text. Their eye would be drawn to menu; they click on their city; and find the info they are looking for.
    thanks again,
    Will

I do like the dark bg you used on the top of the new one, and the colors are nice. But there's too much stuff going on all over the place. Work on some nice tables and fonts to present the site better.

    Hi,
Q: what is the site for?
    A: I don't know!

It doesnt 'say' what the site is for, the only way I know is because you told us earlier in the thread!
I agree with the point some of the other posters said, it is too chaotic and disorganised.

I know that you are going for the simple clean look with maximum loading time and usablility but even 56k dialup connections can render graphics reasonably quickly as long as they are optimised.

Don't lose perspective and go for functionality over content, you need to find the comprimise somewhere in the middle.
