mobile device to enter data into php site

I want to take a wireless switchbox (netgear) connected to my laptop
in my car and take it to a field location .

I want my students to do data entry in the field using a
mobile device they carry. They will view a php/mysql form
running through apache on the laptop - can they access this
    like http://laptop_ip/datainput.php .

    Questions
a.) Do I need WAP or can most mobile devices
access a regular XHTML website and do data input.

b.) Can you recommend some rugged mobile
devices that will allow quick entry of data.
I was thinking on the lines of Zaurus, BlackBerry

c.) Any problems you think I may run into - unsure if PDA can access localhost without a broadband connection in the forest.

    Thanks in advance,
    john

Sorry, but how would you like the wireless device in the field to be connected to your laptop? I imagine that both your laptop and the wireless will have access to the Internet. Your students go to some website using their wireless and entry some data at that website. You are monitoring the same website from your laptop and can see which data were entered. Is this what you mean?

Or you mean some sort of wireless connection directly between the wireless device and your laptop? I cannot imagine how can this be arranged in the field if the distance is more than, say, 20 meters...

    About the wireless devices.

I tried to find out about Zaurus but they don't show, or I didn't find, which protocols are supported by their devices. But BlackBurry devices, at least the latest, do have an Internet browser, so it is almost for certain that you don't need to worry about WAP.

And with the help of PHP you can certainly generate any form you may need.

Thank you asp.da, I was afraid when no one was answering.
I am running EasyPHP on my laptop that allows me to post a form like this.

I only need data collected over a short distance 100 meters would be nice.
I do not have access to any wireless devices that but I'am assuming any devices that connect to the internet can connect to my wireless antenna
on my netgear switch box - need someone to confirm this is possible because
it appears just to be a network between the PDA device and the laptop.
Can anyone confirm this can be done ?

The Zauraus is one device that I came accross

I don't think this is possible. I'd suggest to connect you both, the laptop and the wireless, to the Internet via either GPRS or Wi-Fi (if such a network is available in the field where you live, I was able to try wi-fi only in Singapore airport)

And after you've connected to the Internet, you can do whatever you wish.

asp.da do you know anyone who uses their PDA/Mobile on a local area network.
I'am trying to avoid connecting to the internet all together but use the wireless as a local area network. Guess I need to try this. Was hoping to find someone who already does this.

Any recommendations of rugged PDA/Mobiles that can be used on a local area network. I understand mobiles are extremely popular in Singapore and wondering if they use any rugged ones.

    Thanks for your help
