    unexplainable 3px margin

    Hi,

if you have a look at http://www.desk02.be/beta/rfb/ ... you'll see the menubar which should be touching the top of the vertical letter "d" ... unfortunatly, IE doesn't apply the background-color to the whole div ... it refuses to color the last 3 px. Anyone an idea ?

    Thanks in advance.

It's amazing that I've never been bugged byt this bug before ... I'll change the overal layout cause I'm not using a hack for such a simple layout.

Well, with IE you will have to use hacks sooner or later.

    Hi,

Theres also some useful information in the FAQ about the three pixel jog and problems with floats that you might find useful.

The only wat to avoid the 3 pixel jog is to float the element next to it as the space only occurs on static content next to a float (but as your link wasn't working I couldn't see if that was a solution anyway ).

I fixed the link, the problem was also fixed without hack.

btw, don't mind the JS for the navigation ... I had to redo a framed-flash-containing-website to a XHTML one but the look and feel had to be exactly the same, including the very ugly onmouseovers.

Glad you got it fixed without a hack

However for a different take on hacks you could say that anytime you use height, width, float, position:absolute, position:relative or display:inline-block then you are in fact using a hack to cause ie to have "layout".

This is the reason that the height:1% hack is so succesful because it forces the element to have layout ("haslayout") and behaves as it should have done in the first place .

Why MS felt the need for this is anybody's guess:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/a.../haslayout.asp

Still, it explains a lot of the reasons why all these hacks work Its just a shame we have to stoop so low.
