    What about ipv6 - not widley used at the moment, I know, but why not future proof yourself now and make ip ip varchar(132?)

    Actually, IPv6 will be 128-bit. IP's right now are 32-bit. The maximum IP under IPv6, assuming I've done my binary to decimal conversion correctly, is 4294967295.4294967295.4294967295.4294967295 (43 characters). Where as currently, under the 32-bit system, the maximum IP is 255.255.255.255.

    Note that my numbers may be off due to manual conversion, but the idea is right.
