I was wondering if anyone has come across an online HTML editor. If you use hotmail to compose a message, it has this cute online HTML editor.

This would be great for posting in message boards, instead of using vB code. Anyone come across such a javascript program?

I think the link below should lead to the page:

I did a search on google for online HTML editor and then had a look at some of the links that it came back with and this one seemed to be the best of a bad bunch:

with all due respect...that's just laziness. An online editor will never have the functionality of an installed executable such as EditPlus or Textpad.

Why don't you just use one of those then download a free FTP program. One extra step is worth the benefits of EditPlus.

Actually, I didn't want it to compose HTML for designing webpages.

I was wondering about formatting text in message boards (replies/new posts) like vbulletin or Ubb. Why doesn't it have such an online HTML editor so that people who are not comfortable with HTML code can simply click and paste HTML?

Sitepointforums used to use a very primitive version, a few weeks ago.

The hotmail one is very good actually, and I think it would be great for message boards.

I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it, it would probably be a hindrance to web designers, but as an option, it would IMHO help ordinary users format messages.

    Regards,

Anyone found anything like this then? I've been looking for one to make better news posts, but I can't find one

Something that can be inserted like a TEXTAREA box would be great!

From what I can tell they only work with IE5 - which isn't any good to a serious site

for a look at one in action try http://communities.msn.co.uk/tester1..._whatsnew.msnw

(you have to have a msn passport though)

they use some new dhtml features in IE5 as detailed at http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/a.../ref/cncpt.asp

Seeing as a large proportion of users use IE, I think this would be great, (atleast) as an extra option... The benefits are way too much, to dwell on the disadvantages

ok - here is a tutorial for the IE solution:
    http://www.siteexperts.com/tips/contents/ts12/page1.asp

and here is a java equivelent which I managed to use as an online message-board replacement quite easily. The only thing is it needa the latest plugin (about 8 meg):
    http://www.hexidec.com/ekit.html

so I then went off and developed my own solution (that's not on the net though) in shockwave (much smaller plugin) which works fine apart from the fact that you can not copy and paste because of security issues built into the plugin. If you want a copy to test out let me know and I'll get it up somewhere.
