Question about sites on the same IP

A friend of mine is running a "Free hosting site" and placing a footer on every page he host, however these sites (about 500) are running on the same IP and nameserver. Will this hurt his ranking/keywords ?

Do those that have +20 sites run them on seperate IP's?

I think this is considered SPAM if there are 500 random sites linking to one site.

Maybe if you have one other site on the same IP and you link back to your main site, but 500??!! Don't expect higher rankings or no punishments.

How do you call hosting 500 spam? It's called hosting.

He is hosting users for free, in return he require a banner and a link back to his site (Hosted for free by....) - that is not spam.

You did ask, and that's just Chris W's opinion.

I don't think your friend will have any problems with it, he shouldn't be penalised for it. The weight of the links might not be as great as the same number of links on different IP's, and on relevent sites however.

I don't see any problems with it, that's for sure.

You shouldn't be penalized for it, but you might get reduced benefit compared to having the sites on separate IPs, or better yet, separate IP ranges altogether (class C). Google's patents suggest that some of the reranking algorithms might only consider one site per IP range in order to prevent many sites owned by one person from influencing the results.

Yeah, it's not spam. But it's not as good as having those links coming form sites not on that server.
