Splitting a div into 3 equal columns?

Hey all,

I cannot figure out how to split a div into 3 equal columns, this isn't a website structure, I just have a form that im trying to layout, I tried using floats but they go below eachother

Is everyone else who is trying to produce tableless layouts not using tables for forms? I figure id use tables for tabular data, but not layout. Im not sure where a form stands in this..

Any help on splitting the div?

Most of the time a form can be done without tables. However, I feel that forms are one of those "grey areas" where it can still be OK to use a table. Others may disagree with me, but that's my take on it.

I agree, use a table where a table needs to be used, can you imagine trying to create a calendar with divs

tables are good to use for form layouts you have much more control with them, that's for sure.

I'd go with whatever you find easiest. Forms can be awkward to style in css (although not impossible) but as forms usually have a logical structure then tables can be used in those circumstances.

I don't consider an actual form to be tabular data.. what it produces well that's different but I assume then you take the info and tabularise it?

It's not difficult to CSS a form. Take the big "discovery" in the past was to style navigation menus using unordered lists. The same proncipal could apply to forms

only this time use the elements that are built for the job

you the have the same number of element that a table can give you, but you have the usability of a FORM?

but I live to be persuaded otherwise

I think that forms are where it's very often easier to use a table becasue Forms have always been typically lad out in grids, but if you are to use a table and still try to keep it "semantically" correct how are you going to associate one column with another, when label does the job by it's very nature?
