    1-800 #'s

I was thinking of getting a 1-800 or other toll free number. Where's the best place to purchase one? I've found many web sites out there selling them but I don't really trust a lot of them. It doesn't sound like I'd actually own the number, I'd just be "using" it. Also does anyone know how portable these #'s are? Can I have it used for other countries other than the USA?

Kall8 & Freedom Voice are two of the more popular ones. With FWD & a few other VOIP programs coming into play these days, your customers can use that to call your 800#.

For the most part - you should own the 800# & that number should be transferrable if you did go to another service. There are some companies that give you an 800# and an extension (like 7542). And usualy you share this number with hundreds of other people.

Just got mine through http://www.accessline.biz/ and while It hasn't been used much lately, I'm amazed at the number of features I have.

I have their voicemail service which lets me get voice messages and faxes and it's great to be able to get notification on my cell phone when I have an email or fax waiting for me. Calls or faxes can be viewed online and also forwarded or automatically sent to my email I think.

It's about $8 a month for the 800 number voicemail and I think 6 cents a minute for calls received at that number.

Check 'em out and see what you think.

    Steve

P.S. Do you ever really "own" any other phone number that you have? Yeah, now you can usually take your cell phone number with you if you move or maybe your land line if you use a VOIP service - but in most cases you're paying for use.

Check with the phone company you already use for your phone service. You can often get a toll free line added on for a low rate to your package.

We did that and have a pair of lines for I think 6 cents a minute through AT&T.

A word to the wise here... I've learned that 1-800 numbers don't work when people are trying to call you from overseas. Could be an issue if you deal with international clients.

    www.Kall8.com

Kall8 is inexpensive (compared to AccessLine) and has many of the same features. I switched from AccessLine several years ago and never looked back. You can get a toll-free number for just a few bucks a month and have it route anywhere, even on a schedule. Tons of features.

After reading a similar post on this forum, I recently signed up with www.telcan.net and have been happy with them. I am based in France, so I wanted a 800 number that I could forward to my number here. They can forward the 800 number to anywhere in the world (rates vary by country). It is only $2/month and 6.5 cents/minute and no contract, so you can cancel anytime. Voicemail is an additional $4.99/month but it will email you when you have a message and you can even download and listen to your message from your computer.

Their customer service seems to be good also. I had a question about the way the caller id was working and they answered within 24 hours and completely helped me out.

    Hope this helps.

For those who aren't sure about whether to get an 800 number, I'll point out what I've read in several places. Customers are up to 7, yes 7 times more likely to call an 800 number from a sales piece than a "regular" number.

800 Toll Free numbers are reachable from oversea, but they are billed at international calling rates.

    I signed up with uReach:

    http://www.ureach.com

and they offer an interesting service: voicebox, e-mail and fax at the same number.

Mr. Mason, please don't be misleading. Judging from the PM you just sent me Tollfreemax is your service, or you are advertising for them. There's nothing wrong with mentioning your services, after all, John needs an 800 number. But you don't have to pretend to be an objective 3rd party.

VOIP is generally less expensive than the traditional phone companies. I reviewed the major players and chose telcan.net for one reason or the other. Have been happy with their service.

Hmmm...so you got a PM from Mr. Mason too?? That doesn't seem like the best way for a new forum member to make new friends around here, does it?

I just bought Kall8, it took about 4 minutes to enroll and 2 minutes later I had my own 1-800 # ringing to my cell phone, this thing is nice, I recommend it. I pay 5$/month plus 6.9 cents per minute. It would be only 2$ per month if you got a 1-866,877,888 though. I researched all the other ones talked about on here but like this one!

People who signed up for Kall8

    (standard 800 number /w voicemail)

    Kall8
    http://www.kall8.com/rates.htm
    $5 /month
    $0.069 /minute
    Voicemail (included I assume)

    Accessline
    http://www.smart800now.com/index.asp?nav=rates
    $3.45 /month
    $0.069 /minute
    $4.99 /month voicemail
    50 minutes free ($3.45 value)

Assuming you use more than 50 minutes per month the prices would be nearly identical. With this in mind, why choose Kall8 over Accessline? Also, Accessline does not mention if your plan comes with fax forwarding too - do they? If not then I figure it's an additional 3.94.

Sadly I was unable to find everything I wanted to know on both sites...
