Too new for reputation? (And a squirrel for good measure)

For a while now I have been getting neutral reputation for lack of a better description. The reason I use the word neutral is that no reputation is given or taken away. Plus, instead of a green or red dot, I am greeted with a grey dot. I assumed that this was just because some newer users didn't understand how to use the sytem properly. Then, upon handing out some rep, I realized it just wasn't possible to hand out neutral rep (why bother anyway?). Upon reviewing the posts for which I received neutral rep I have determined that it is likely because the user leaving the reputation has so few posts (or whatever it is that determines how much rep someone can award another member) that they simply cannot give positive reputation. Is this the case? My guess if it were it would be so no one would sign up new users just to boost their repuation and that makes sense. Just wondering aloud.

That's my take on it as well (I've pondered long and hard on this issue for months).

The amount by which your reputation is changed depends on the reputation and post count of the giver. If their reputation is below 10 (the default starting level) or their post count is below 50, then although they can still give you rep it will not affect your reputation score. It should still show whether the reputation was positive or negative though.

Yep. Like Tom said, if the user's rep is too low for whatever reason, any rep they give out won't affect your score and thus it will be "neutral". The only way to tell if it was good or bad would be if the user left a descriptive enough comment.

You're being contradicted, Vinnie. I think it would just be helpful if the little icon glowed green or red... I don't mind that it doesn't give you any rep points, but it would be nice to know that it actually was a positive rep.

There are people like me who go on Reputation sprees. It seems that when I really want to give reputation out to someone, I can't because I haven't spread enough joy since the last time. So to rectify that, I have to go on a Spree of Reputation giving.

The amount can be changed in the Admin Control Panel. However if default settings are used I should give:

5 points for length of registration (1 point per year)
11 points for posts (1 point per thousand posts)
3 points for reputation (1 point per 100 reputation points)

So that would be 19 points. But if they changed the numbers than I don't know. The 10 and 50 mentioned above are default but not sure about the others. Not sure if the code does fractions in the point giving but if it did, I could easily pass 20 points at a time.

Hmm, so I'm worth six points then... seven if you hit me with a rep. (JK). I'm not aware of Tom having changed the way points are calculated, but then he doesn't have to check with me before doing things like that, LoL.
