I am not sure why but when I start safe_mysqld it just sits there and doesn't return to the prompt. And if I logout it stops the server. Why is it doing this, I don't have the same problem with my other server. I installed it using Apachetoolbox if that helps.

That's how it's meant to work - it sits running in the background ready to accept connections until you close it down.

If you don't want a console window displayed you can use the winmysqladmin.exe utility provided with current releases of mySQL for windows. This will stick a traffic light icon in the windows systray that indicates the database is running instead of leaving a MSDOS console window open.

If you're using linux, run it using mysqld &

The & makes it run in the background.

I am not using Windows, but rather SuSE Linux 7.1 Pro. It doesn't exit when I logout of Linux 7.0, although I start it differently than in 7.1. I figured it would set it to run as a Deamon in the background just like HTTPD or NAMED. I guess I will just have to let it logged in although this is a major security risk for local foot traffic.
