how confiable is a php socket server?

Hi guys, im working on a chat-server written in php but a few friends said that sockets in php wouldnt be that confiable.

Does anybody has some (bad) experience using it?

(its a 'simple' chat server with a small autentication and no large data. Also it will be used by a max of 300 users simultaneous.)

Sockets are fine, if you arent intercepting a heck of alot of data then it will run almost flawlessly...

tell your friends they don't know anything :P

never had a problem with sockets and i've made bots for both IRC and MSN.. so go figure

Might want to use perl, there are several examples and probably modules available.

no its not , thats a valid reaction from say 12-18 months ago , not today.
take a look at the streams classes & fuctions , the good stuff is PHP5 but you can still work with the socket extension in 4 quite reliably , to be honest it is probably something best handled at a lower level but its still quite doable.

Eii, I've had bad experiences with sockets... I've seen packets received by PHP get delayed by 10 minutes or more, which was very strange. Sometimes it'd be immediate, others 10 minutes. That could be the server though. Best to try it and find out.
