    Blogs

I feel that I'm being left behind. I don't have a blog or use any blog sites.

Am I missing something / are there any really useful blogs?

Is a blog basically an online diary that allows the owner to make daily posts and visitors to the site to comment on the posts?

If you've read your local newspaper you've read a blog. A blog, in the most basic sense, is anything updated on a regular basis, usually with the newest items first. A blog can be a journal, or a trade magazine, or a newspaper or a list of daily links. People get caught up in the "blog" part of it, and it's really personal publishing. Publish whatever you want with a "blogging" tool, news, reviews, articles - an entire site. Or, post your daily trials and tribulations as a journal.

My personal blog focus's on my web dev experiences and my opinions with some occassional navel gazing and creative writing. I blog on other projects too, most of which would be considered "trade journals", I would think.

Hello again Crowe, thanks for the education. Just had a look at your blog site, very nice indeed, interesting reading, in blog terms your site must be pretty old having started in 2002.

    His is

Mine's "old", having started last year. Blogging really started catching on more seriously in June of last year. We went from about a million blogs to more than 10,000,000 in just a year. It's exploding.

Crowe's right though. A blog is simply a content delivery method. A magazine could be a blog. A newspaper could be a blog. A TV channel could be a blog (video blogging).

Generally blogs have certain things in common, but those boundaries are being pushed every single day.

sure, but they are about as common as really useful personal web sites used to be before they started calling themselves blogs

    that's it in a nutshell

    here's a good synopsis: Metablogging...

as theodore sturgeon suggested, 90% of everything is crap, except that in blogging, this number actually goes up

I feel the same. I did start one, but it really doesn't fit. I do use it to post anything Native American or jewelry related. My thought is it will not hurt anything to have.

Blogs tend to become boring and of poor quality... not all, but most. Who cares if you decided to clean your room or play the rebel teen and go 'hang' with your buddies >

Ah, yes, another "blogs are just about your life" guy

www.businesspundit.com, www.marketingvox.com, www.alwayson.com, http://scoble.weblogs.com, www.apennyfor.com... There are literally thousands of blogs which are about business, businesses, careers, marketing, PR...

They're newsletters, magazines and newspapers, just in a different format.

"Blog" doesn't define content. It doesn't even define medium as we now have audio and video blogging. More than anything "blog" is about a frame of mind and an intention to communicate.

Sure, many of those will be personal. Which is fine. But a huge number (hundreds of thousands) are "content sites" wrapped up in a blogging format.

It would appear that there are some really useful blogs out there. I say useful from a content perspective. Thanks for the links Jeremy. One thing I can't help noticing is that a lot of blogs appear to have really good PR.

    merely playing devil's advocate...

http://www.businesspundit.com/ is a blog (the "and anything else that interests me" is the giveaway)

http://www.marketingvox.com/ is just a news regurgitator

http://www.alwayson.com/ looks like an ordinary web site (where's the blog?)

http://scoble.weblogs.com/ uses a lot of words to say very little (but links to a cute cartoon: "We have nothing to say", "Quick! Let's talk about blogs!")

    http://www.apennyfor.com/ cannot find server

you're right, though -- "blog" is about a frame of mind and an intention to communicate.

    emphasis on intention
