There is many ways of doing it...that one you pointed out there is pretty nice. You can use a simple javascript to make the image come up in a new window by itself....also do a search on www.hotscripts.com for imaging scripts.
You can do it using CSS by linking the image and assigning a hover state to display the larger image. Probably worth looking into the CSS forum for some good tutorials.
I think that styling hover may work just fine, if u can apply z-index property to the hover state it wont mess with your design, i don't know if is possible never try but let me check
